Homeowners Insurance Information
Your home is much more than four walls and a roof. Your home represents your hopes, your dreams, your family, and your lifestyle. Protect the enormous investment you've made both financially and emotionally with a tailor made homeowner insurance policy from Beathard Insurance.
Homeowner’s Insurance Coverage Types
A standard homeowner’s insurance policy includes four types of coverage:
This covers damage caused by windstorms, hail, and more. Damage related to flooding, earthquakes, and sewer backups are not covered in the standard policy and must be purchased separately.
Personal belongings coverage:
This protects the contents of your house that have been stolen or destroyed from vandalism, theft, or an insured disaster such as fire.
Additional living expenses coverage:
This coverage is included, should you be forced out of your home due to an insured disaster or incident. The expenses incurred while your home is being repaired or rebuilt maybe be covered through your homeowner’s policy.
Liability protection coverage:
This is always included through homeowner’s policies. This coverage is for accidents and injuries that occur on your property as well as any property damage that the policyholder family members may cause to other people or property. This liability coverage also includes protection against claims or lawsuits. The costs associated with this coverage is very low.
The standard homeowner’s insurance policy covers several perils, however earthquakes and floods require separate, supplemental coverage. There are many other additional homeowner coverage options that do not come standard and will need to be purchased separately but, we're happy to review your policy and make you aware of any coverage gaps.
Homeowners Coverage Options
In addition to the standard homeowner’s policy, there are a number of coverage options that can be used to provide a wider range of protection.
The average homeowner’s policy covers the damage to or loss of personal contents however that coverage does not extend to renters. As such, the ordinary tenant would lose everything if their apartment was ravaged by a fire. Purchasing renter’s insurance would give the tenant the same personal property protection afforded to homeowners. If you are interested in learning more about renters insurance, please visit our renter’s insurance page or phone one of our Texas Friendly agents.
If you reside in a flood zone, it is beneficial to you to purchase coverage from the National Flood Insurance Program. Some mortgage companies actually require flood insurance if you reside in a flood zone. Failure to have this coverage could put you at the mercy of rising floodwaters and severe damage.
For those who want extra protection from major lawsuits and insurance claims, umbrella coverage is also available. These policies provide additional liability insurance which is popular with clients who own a lot of assets. The comprehensive form of coverage will help protect their property and its contents well above the standard limits of the average home insurance policy.

What is Homeowners insurance?
Homeowners insurance provides financial protection against disasters. A standard policy insures the home itself and the things you keep in it.
Homeowners insurance is a package policy. This means that it covers both damage to your property and your liability or legal responsibility for any injuries and property damage you or members of your family cause to other people. This includes damage caused by household pets.
Damage caused by most disasters is covered but there are exceptions. The most significant are damage caused by floods, earthquakes and poor maintenance. You must buy two separate policies for flood and earthquake coverage. Maintenance-related problems are the homeowners' responsibility.
Why do you need homeowners insurance?
It is really all about protecting yourself financially if something unexpected happens to your home or possessions. That's important because chances are your home is likely one of your largest investments.
- If your home was destroyed by fire or damaged by a natural disaster, you'd need money to repair or replace it.
- If a guest in your home is injured, liability protection and medical coverage help pay expenses.
- If you are a victim of theft and vandalism, it can reimburse you for your loss or pay for repairs.
- If you are still paying for your home, your lender will require insurance.
It is important to know that homeowners insurance is meant to cover unexpected damage, not routine maintenance. Ask your agent to talk about what is covered and be sure to read your policy so you know exactly what's included and what is not.
Things to consider and questions to ask your agent
Here are few things to discuss with your agent that will influence your decisions.
- How much will it cost to rebuild my house and replace my belongings if they are damaged or destroyed? (Ask your agent to talk you through your home's features and the things you own so you can make an informed decision about coverage.)
- Does the insurance company have a good reputation for customer service? Is it known for paying claims fairly and promptly?
- What discounts are available? (Ask about multiple policy, security system and fire resistance discounts.)
- What's the process for filing and settling a claim? (Ask who to call and what happens after you file a claim.)
