This year marks the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. You cannot control the tropics, but you can be prepared for what they can bring.
Here are a few things to keep in mind when preparing your supply kit:
• Only 54.3 percent of households have an emergency water supply. Avoid the last minute rush for drinking water and keep plenty in storage.
• Nearly one-fifth do not have enough non-perishable food to sustain their household for three days. Stock up on canned goods and other foods that will survive for a few days.
• Nearly half of American households have at least one pet. In addition to thinking about the humans in your household, plans should be made for the care of your pets.
• Only 18.3 percent single-family homes have a power generator. Many have a vital medical need for electricity and should prepare accordingly.
